SANANBIO Equipment Featured in Study of Intermittent Blue Light for Lettuce
An open-access study published in Food and Energy Security tested intermittent blue-light schedules using SANANBIO-developed LEDs, nutrient solutions and growth modules.
A research article first published in Food and Energy Security on April 3, 2025 examined how intermittent supplemental blue light influences heading development in lettuce. Authors included researchers associated with the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Wageningen University & Research and Fujian Sanan Sino-Science Photobiotech.
The experimental methods state that the work was conducted at a SANANBIO research laboratory in Xiamen, China. They identify the LED lighting fixtures, nutrient solutions and growth modules as developed by SANANBIO. The investigators compared blue-light schedules while maintaining a constant red-light photon flux and daily light integral.
Under the tested conditions, intermittent treatments promoted the appearance of the leafy head trait without reducing the measured biomass. In particular, the authors reported that a 15-minute interval treatment shortened by eight days the time required for half of the experimental plants to reach the heading stage. This is a specific research finding, not a guaranteed result for other lettuce varieties, equipment configurations or farms.
The paper is a published scientific study with SANANBIO participation and research equipment; it should not be presented as an independent customer case.
