UC Davis Research Used SANANBIO Hydroponic Systems for Lettuce Biomass Monitoring

A 2022 peer-reviewed study at the University of California, Davis used SANANBIO hydroponic systems to grow lettuce while testing computer-vision methods for estimating plant biomass. The reported prediction accuracy relates to the researchers’ algorithm, not to the farming equipment.

According to a research article published in Frontiers in Plant Science on April 13, 2022, researchers at the University of California, Davis investigated how color and depth imagery combined with deep learning could estimate the biomass of lettuce plants without destructive harvesting.

The experimental cultivation setup used recirculating nutrient-film-technique hydroponic systems supplied by SANANBIO in Xiamen, China. The researchers described four vertically stacked tiers, with two growing trays per tier, and used the growing environment to collect images and corresponding biomass measurements.

The paper reported a mean biomass prediction error of 7.3% on a test dataset of 864 plants. This figure describes the performance of the research team’s prediction method; it is not a claimed yield, accuracy, or productivity specification of SANANBIO equipment.

For research institutions evaluating controlled-environment agriculture infrastructure, the publication documents an identifiable academic use of SANANBIO hydroponic equipment. It does not establish a formal research partnership or commercial endorsement by UC Davis.
