Aquponi Launches an Indoor Strawberry and Trout Aquaponics System in Japan

Japan’s Aquponi announced a modular aquaponics system combining indoor strawberries with rainbow trout, while presenting projected production figures.

VerticalFarmDaily reported on October 19, 2026, that Yokohama-based Aquponi had commercially launched its Aquponi Berry Farm system on October 5. The concept combines indoor strawberry growing with rainbow trout production, using the nutrient cycle of aquaculture to support crop growth.

The company described two established installations in Japan and proposed modular deployments beginning at approximately 1,200 square metres. LED lighting and indoor environmental controls are part of its year-round production approach. Aquponi also introduced a specialized fish feed intended to support the linked nutrient system.

For a 1,200-square-metre site, Aquponi estimates about 36 tonnes of strawberries annually from around 15,200 plants. These are projections issued by the company, not independently measured output from a completed commercial production cycle. The project demonstrates how controlled-environment designers are exploring combined crop and fish production, with nutrients and water management central to the engineering model.
