Stage at source reporting: research-demonstration-reported
An April 2026 report described an experimental automated plant factory developed by the Institute of Urban Agriculture of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences in Chengdu. The report outlined 20-layer cultivation racks and robotic handling steps including transplanting and harvesting. It described an 8.8-metre-high facility designed to test dense vertical production.
The report is relevant to the technical limits of automation, rack height, access and material handling in plant factories. Any very high productivity figures reported for a prototype must remain attributed to the researchers and should not be treated as general commercial performance. The source does not connect the project to SANANBIO.
