Illinois Nonprofit Launches Container Hydroponics Training with Theodora Farms

Challenge Unlimited and Theodora Farms are using a hydroponic growing container to teach cultivation and work skills.

VerticalFarmDaily reported on October 15, 2026, that Illinois-based nonprofit Challenge Unlimited had partnered with Theodora Farms on a hydroponics training program. Participants learn about nutrient solutions, irrigation, lighting schedules, harvesting and other practical parts of indoor crop production.

The program operates in a specially equipped growing container. Crops mentioned by the partners include lettuce, kale, herbs and several other vegetables. The farm’s organizers have described an estimated production equivalent of 8,000–12,000 pounds per year, but that is a reported estimate rather than an audited annual harvest result.

The partnership combines food production with workforce preparation for people with disabilities. Its commercial-development ambition also includes growing into a self-supporting operation. This is a real training initiative, but its future business targets should not be stated as accomplished. The example may interest educators and community organizations considering compact controlled-environment systems.
