Kerala Grower Uses Indoor Climate Controls to Develop a Saffron Business

A grower in India’s Kerala state reported turning rooftop indoor saffron cultivation into a small commercial and training activity.

According to VerticalFarmDaily on November 2, 2026, James Kappani in Thrissur, Kerala, has developed a rooftop indoor saffron operation using automated controls for temperature, humidity and lighting. The project seeks to grow a crop usually associated with cooler conditions in Kashmir.

The grower described moving from initial experiments toward commercial sales and training. The report mentioned a selling price of approximately INR 650 per gram, which is a reported selling figure, not proof of margin, consistent yield or a market-wide price.

Indoor saffron is attracting interest because the spice is high value, but flowering success depends on bulb quality and strict environmental management. This example illustrates the potential for small controlled rooms and specialized crops, without demonstrating that identical systems will generate profitable results elsewhere. The report does not describe SANANBIO equipment at this site.
