Light Spectrum and Intensity in Lettuce and Basil Vertical Farming

Research overview: A 2025 study compared several LED spectral treatments for lettuce and basil in controlled-environment vertical farming. Findings reflect the original experiment rather than SANANBIO product performance.

A 2025 study compared several LED spectral treatments for lettuce and basil in controlled-environment vertical farming. The experiments combined white LEDs with different amounts of deep-red and far-red light and tested an additional higher-intensity condition. The researchers reported differences in biomass, leaf area and other growth characteristics across the treatments.

For commercial growers, the practical lesson is that the correct light recipe cannot be reduced to a simple 'red versus blue' choice. Both spectrum and photon intensity changed the measured crop response, and the authors reported different effects on canopy development and plant pigments. The work was performed at Vegger B.V. in the Netherlands; it was not a trial of SANANBIO fixtures. Its results should be treated as evidence about the tested experimental conditions, not as a claim about any particular commercial product.
